In spite of its assets (young, educated population, little extreme poverty and available natural resources), this region suffers from increasingly significant social and ecological pressure, leading to unprecedented changes and challenging the possibilities for medium and long-term development. IRD has been working around the Mediterranean since 1956 and has five representatives there today.

Highlights
  • International Africa-Latin America-Europe meeting on climate change and its impacts

    This event was held from 11-13 May 2016 in Agadir, with the Brazilian geostrategic research centre, and brought together around a hundred researchers from 14 countries and 3 continents. They worked on issues related to the climate and its changes, sustainable development and natural resources, combining science, technology and innovation in their approach. The discussions resulted in the signature of the Agadir declaration and a project to set up an international platform of excellence, which could be based at Ibn Zohr University in Agadir.

  • COP22: IRD’s involvement

    The 22nd Conference of the parties of the United National Framework Convention on Climate Change was held in Marrakesh from 7-18 November 2016. After its involvement in COP20 and 21, IRD naturally took part in COP22, putting special focus on Mediterranean issues.
