Research for development in Europe

Share

IRD’s European advocacy work, co-ordinated by the European affairs service and facilitated by the presence of a representative based in Brussels, has strengthened IRD’s visibility and its influence in the European institutions.

IRD actively participates in calls for projects under European programmes, primarily the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation and the EuropeAid programme for co-operation and development. Thus, since 2014, IRD has won 39 research projects from Horizon 2020 calls, and 18 projects funded by the EuropeAid programme.

Moreover, IRD is the coordinator for the European Expert Network on International Cooperation and Development, a network founded by the European Commission, aiming to provide academic, strategic and targeted insights about the major co-operation and development issues.

And in the future?

In 2019, the Institute will continue its efforts to increase the number of European projects with teams in the South, as well as its incentive actions on ERC grants.

It will submit its application to obtain “HRS4R” European HR recognition, for transparency and attractiveness in the careers of researchers. In the context of renewal of the European institutions in 2019 and for post-2020, IRD will continue to promote “more research with developing countries” in future European policies and programmes.

In addition to this, IRD will continue to promote the creation of a mechanism similar to the ERC for Africa: an African Research Council (ARC), to provide ongoing support for research excellence on the African continent.
