IRD coordinates the European SLAFNET project, devoted to the legacy of slavery

Creating an international research network devoted to the legacy of slavery, in Africa and in Europe: this is the objective of the SLAFNET research project, co-ordinated by IRD. Funded by the European Commission, it brings together a multidisciplinary team of around 50 researchers, in a consortium of 13 partners from the North and South.

For three years, SLAFNET will support synergy between research works by European and African, French speaking and English-speaking teams, on the social dynamics established after the abolition of slavery and up to the present day.

The project will mobilise over 50 researchers in France, Kenya, Mauritius, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Senegal, Germany, Portugal and the United Kingdom. It will allow us to:

The 13 partners of SLAFNET will conduct their work in three areas: training, research and promotion, in order to promote and support cooperation between researchers and institutions on the two continents, strengthen support for young African and European researchers, and develop new synergies with the academic and non-academic world.
